Confidence Building 101:
Confidence Building 101 says you must learn to know yourself. Find your strengths and weaknesses. Then do things to build resilience through self-awareness. But, what if there’s more to the story?
Why don’t you feel like you can show your face at the gym anymore? You know something’s not right because the feelings of shame are closing in on you. Heading into that meeting, you suddenly feel like you’re back in your school uniform and everyone is throwing stones. Or maybe, you were the most popular kid in school – you just never felt like it. It feels like your confidence needs a refresh.
What our outsides say often don’t match our insides. We all have moments where we wish we were larger than life.
Seizures secure a host of feelings we often want to push away. Falling in front of crowds doesn’t inspire confidence. Waking up and wondering who saw you fail makes you want to crawl into a proverbial hole. Doing it again and again doesn’t necessarily mean you’re managing the emotions of it all well.
The conversations I faced because of moments outside my control were unpredictable. What stories would others be telling? Did it matter? Would I allow it to matter?
God wants to be your confidence …
Here’s the thing: God wants to be your confidence. True Confidence Building 101: When God is your confidence you’re living a story with purpose, even if it’s messy. It’s one where He makes the broken things beautiful. You don’t need to rebuild on your own or give yourself a pep talk. You get to lean into Him. He holds you steady. This is true whether everyone’s staring or not caring.
He stands in the place of your lack and gives you everything you need.
Rebuilding on your own is very difficult. Even with others standing next to you, it’s a challenge. We struggle to communicate our needs. We also struggle to express what we’re really feeling.
God given confidence is a security no one else can take away or provide. This is pure, inalienable joy, even when you fall on the floor and look really, really ridiculous.
We all have things we struggle with. We’re all still learning. Finding sufficiency in ourselves will lead to destruction. But, if you let him, God will be your confidence.
